(FeaturedNews.com) – President Biden slammed the GOP for not taking any action to increase gun control following the recent mass shooting in Texas which resulted in nine people dying.

In his statement on Sunday, Biden pointed out that this tragedy had caused many families to suffer and yet Republican Members of Congress were only addressing this “epidemic with a shrug.” He proceeded to note that tweeting out “thoughts and prayers” was insufficient which was why he was calling on Congress again to pass a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Biden further pushed for universal background checks, firearm safety storage, and “ending immunity” for manufacturers of firearms. He added that if such a bill arrived on his desk, he would sign it immediately in order to ensure the safety of the U.S. people.

According to the local authorities, a gunman opened fire in a shopping mall a few miles outside of Texas. This resulted in the death of nine people, one of whom was the gunman, and the hospitalization of seven others. Of those in the hospital, four are in stable condition while three are in critical condition.

Biden has been an advocate of an assault weapon ban for years and he often calls for Congress to pass such a ban, especially following the increase in mass shootings. He further ordered for flags to be flown at half-staff until May 11 in order of the victims of the shooting. In his statement, he added that federal, state, and local agencies were all cooperating in investigating the shooting and that federal agencies would provide additional support following the incident.
