(FeaturedNews.com) – The Department of Homeland Security has signed a contract with New York-based firm Debevoise & Plimpton which would help bring in external attorneys to help in any potential House GOP investigation and case brought forth against Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The House GOP had previously vowed to both investigate and impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border, noting that he had not carried out his duty of securing the border.
The New York law firm is going to take an advisory role in helping administration officials with the handling of requests and questions from the investigative committee. It will also assist in defending the department in the case that Republicans continued to aim for an impeachment trial. The firm is going to handle the representation of both the DHS and the secretary in his official capacity.
The Biden administration has stated on multiple occasions that the investigation was a political ploy but the attorneys hired will help in handling the situation in a serious matter. If an impeachment case is brought forth against Mayorkas, it will be the first time that a Cabinet member has had to handle impeachment proceedings since 1876.
The DHS does not have staff that could be pulled from their positions in order to handle the impeachment proceedings. According to their official statement, they also want to ensure that these proceedings do not have an effect on the work of the DHS. This is why outside counsel was brought to assist with these cases.
