(FeaturedNews.com) – Hotels in New York will no longer be allowed to provide guests with mini “hospitality care” products.
The mandate, which goes into effect on January 1, 2025, was passed by the New York Assembly to reduce plastic waste.
According to the Department of Environmental Conversation, it would apply to hotels with 50 or more rooms, preventing them from providing toiletries of less than 12 ounces.
Initially introduced in 2019, the act defines a “hospitality personal care product” as one the hotel provides and is intended to be used or applied to “the human body or any part thereof for cleansing.”
Violating hotels will first receive a warning and 30 days to “correct the violation,” if the hotel doesn’t course correct, it will be fined $250 initially and then $500 afterward should it continue providing the banned toiletry products after the initial fine.
However, many of the largest hotel chains have already made adjustments.
According to a spokesperson for Marriott Hotels, by the end of 2023, the hotel chain had achieved “95% compliance” in “switching from small toiletry bottles to larger, pump-topped bottles,” as it tries to reduce plastic waste.
A spokesperson for Hilton revealed that “As of 2023, Hilton properties were required to transition to full-size” toiletry products.
Although the initial rollout targets hotels with more than 50 rooms, by 2026, all hotels in New York must comply.
The bill was intended to go into effect on January 1, 2023; however, lobbyists for the hotel industry pushed for a delay to allow the hotels to use the remaining miniature toiletries in stock.
