The group Muslim Women for Harris-Walz has decided to disband following the Democratic National Committee’s refusal to allow a Palestinian American to speak at the Democratic National Convention. The group’s members, who had been fervent supporters of the Biden-Harris ticket, felt that their views were systematically ignored.

The members of this coalition cited their inability to continue in good conscience as a reason for their dissolution. They stated that not being granted a platform to highlight the suffering in Gaza was a significant oversight by the party.

Advocating for Palestinian Voices

The protest movement included uncommitted delegates advocating for an arms embargo to Israel and a complete cease-fire in Gaza. They organized a sit-in outside the convention, demanding a Palestinian speaker to take the stage.

“Uncommitted delegates urge the Democratic party to reject a hierarchy of human value by ensuring Palestinian voices are heard on the main stage. We are learning that Israeli hostages’ families will be speaking from the main stage. We strongly support that decision and also strongly hope that we will also be hearing from Palestinians who’ve endured the largest civilian death toll since 1948.”

Members of the group were particularly disappointed with the lack of empathy shown by the DNC and the Harris campaign towards Palestinian Americans. They felt this exclusion betrayed the Democratic Party’s commitment to represent various groups equally.

A Broader Discontent

The DNC’s decision brought criticism from within the Democratic Party. Figures like U.S. Reps. Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib openly criticized the Harris campaign’s decisions. Pro-Palestinian protests occurred daily outside the convention in Chicago, which has a significant Palestinian community.

“The family of the Israeli hostage that was on the stage tonight, has shown more empathy towards Palestinian Americans and Palestinians, than our candidate or the DNC has,” the Muslim Women for Harris-Walz stated. “This is a terrible message to send to Democrats. Palestinians have the right to speak about Palestine.”

Further complicating the scenario, party leaders remain divided regarding whether a Palestinian speaker should be included. Some, like Brianna Wu, argued against it, fearing potential disruptions. Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib criticized the DNC for erasing Palestinian voices and urged equal recognition of Palestinian and Israeli lives.
