Democrats Looking to Add Seats to Supreme Court

(FeaturedNews.com) – On Tuesday, a group of Democratic lawmakers reintroduced a bill that would add four more seats to the Supreme Court. The move comes following a series of recent reports that have led to questions about ethics in the country’s highest court, as well as questioned the overturning of the landmark abortion case, Roe v. Wade.

Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass) during a press conference in front of the Supreme Court argued that even in school if a bully takes your lunch money you will take action against him. He added that they are now trying to “reclaim these seats” so as to block the bully from being successful.

The legislation was first introduced two years ago, and it sought to make the Supreme Court have 13 justices. This would mean that there would be an equal number of justices and courts of appeals. The reintroduction of the proposal comes after last year the court overturned Roe v. Wade, as well as ruled on major other cases that marked a shift in the Court’s direction to the right. The Republicans have opposed this legislation claiming that the Democrats were attempting to weaponize the Supreme Court.

Recently the Supreme Court has also come under a lot of scrutiny, after several ProPublica reports showed that Justice Clarence Thomas had accepted luxury trips and other gifts from GOP megadonor Harlan Crow without ever disclosing them. According to the report, the two also had an undisclosed real estate deal, and Crow had paid for a relative of Thomas’ private schooling. Thomas has defended not disclosing the trips arguing that they fell under the personal hospitality exception.
