Democrats Call For Defunding Police
The vice chair of the Treasury Department’s new racial equity committee has announced that they want to defund the police and start making racial justice the center of all government policymaking.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday announced that the Treasury Advisory Committee on Racial Equity would be formed and comprised 25 members. The committee’s role will be to review different aspects of the domestic economy “that have directly and indirectly resulted in unfavorable conditions for communities of color.”
Felicia Wong, the president and CEO of the Roosevelt Institute, was announced as the new committee’s vice chair. Wong is a former executive at the Democracy Alliance. She has led the Roosevelt Institute since 2012, the institution is a liberal think tank looking to prohibit for-profit prisons and place racial justice at the forefront of policy making.
The Roosevelt Institute last year published a report that was co-authored by Wong, titled “A New Paradigm for Justice and Democracy,” in which they said that every single policy would need to be considering race as part of the policy design.
Wong and the authors said that the current system ignores systemic racism and that mainstream policymaking is not prioritizing race equity and promoting the multiracial democracy of the country.
The report also spoke about wealth redistribution for racial justice and said that equity would mean equal outcomes for everyone.
