(FeaturedNews.com) – In an interview on Sunday, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) argued that the Supreme Court Justices should have term limits. She also left the option of possible court expansion open.
While appearing on “Inside with Jen Psaki,” Pelosi claimed that there “should be term limits” for the Supreme Court justices. She argued that currently the Supreme Court is composed of people who are selected for life, are never required to run for office, and have no accountability regarding their ethical standards and behavior.
These comments come a year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a landmark court case that had previously protected abortion rights for close to five decades. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion rights were once again handed over to the states.
Recently the Supreme Court has also come under fire after the revelations about Justice Clarence Thomas not including gifts he had received in his financial disclosures. The reports about Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have also led to many questioning whether the country’s highest court needed to have ethics standards established.
On this front, Pelosi argued that ethics rules should not only be established but also should be followed. She proceeded to argue that it was “shameful” having Thomas and Alito be “so cavalier” over the violations they have committed.
When asked about whether the court should be expanded, Pelosi simply stated it’s “a discussion.” She further pointed out that the last court expansion was 150 years ago when during Lincoln’s time the number of Supreme Court justices went up to nine.
