(FeaturedNews.com) – In June the arrests at the southern border dropped by close to 30 percent, bringing them to their lowest levels since the start of the Biden administration. On Monday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the new data as President Biden’s asylum restrictions have been in effect.
CBP noted that in June there were around 83,000 people who had been arrested, marking a drop from May, when around 118,000 people had been arrested. These new numbers are the lowest arrest levels since January 2021.
Early last month Biden announced that there would be a change to asylum processing which would stop after 2,500 people had been processed each day.
In a statement acting CBP Commissioner Troy Miller noted in a statement that the measures implemented recently have had an important impact on their options for imposing consequences for those that had unlawfully crossed into the country.
Miller pointed out that the border crossing’s seven-day average has dropped by over 50 percent since the change in the asylum claims, and that it has become easy for people to be quickly deported to their home country or expelled to Mexico.
On Monday CBP had announced that since the announcement of the order they have returned over 70,000 individuals to over 170 countries. The agency pointed out that this is the highest number of returns and removals out of any year since 2010.
This data could be particularly impactful for Biden ahead of the 2024 presidential election, especially as the White House has slammed the GOP for failing to acknowledge the decline in crossings.
