Former Governor ARRESTED on Corruption Charges!

(FeaturedNews.com) – The former governor of Puerto Rico faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the crimes the Justice Department says she committed. Wanda Vazquez Garced, 62, allegedly collected bribes to bolster her 2020 re-election campaign. Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. issued a press release stating the DOJ is committed to holding those in seats of power accountable for fomenting distrust in the American electoral system.

According to the statement, Vazquez Garced took bribes from at least four individuals who also face or have pleaded guilty to charges in the conspiracy. The parties include two international bankers, a former FBI agent, and a political consultant.

The indictment alleges the former executive took money in exchange for promises of political appointments. She lost her bid to keep her office to current Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia in the 2020 general election and left the position in January 2021.

The Justice Department’s release leans heavily on Vazquez Garced’s possible impact on the already fragile confidence in the US electoral system. It quotes Special Agent in Charge Joseph González of the San Juan field office, who said, “Public corruption erodes the people’s trust in our institutions and fuels civil unrest.” He goes on to note that the FBI is dedicated to focusing on cases in which the American people are the victims of those elected or appointed to serve.
