Sidhu’s lawyer, Paul Meyer, said the mayor’s decision to resign was for the good of the city and to help put the scandal behind him. The mayor did not admit to any wrongdoing, nor has he been charged with a crime. Sidhu is confident that a thorough investigation will exonerate him.
Meyer added that Sidhu never used the Anaheim Stadium deal to solicit campaign contributions. According to the LA Times, federal investigators are looking into allegations that Sidhu gave confidential information about the deal to the Angels organization.
The stadium sale, which would net the city $320 million and guarantee the team stays until 2050, has already resulted in criminal charges and may have damaged the public’s trust in its own elected officials. According to USA Today, City Spokesman Mike Lyster said that while the mayor’s resignation is regrettable, it is also a welcome move to get the stadium negotiations back on track.
