Football Coach Cancels Practice for Incredible Cause

Bethel Park High School football coach Brian DeLallo’s message to his team on Sunday night went viral. DeLallo sent a message to his team as snow began to fall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he noted that their Monday weightlifting workout had been canceled and that instead, his team should go “Find an elderly or disabled neighbor and shovel their driveway.” He added that they weren’t allowed to accept any monetary compensation as this would act as their Monday workout.

DeLallo told TODAY.com that he sent the tweet a day before in order to get ahead of the snowstorm. It was also a way of letting the parents know that their kids should not be on the road.

Around 40 players did as instructed and headed outside regardless of the temperatures in order to help their community. DeLallo added that his players had been out shoveling even before he woke up. In fact, when he did wake up, he found a number of texts saying things like ‘Hey coach we got three driveways in, heading to our fourth now.'” DeLallo added that he was lucky to be in such a community as all the kids did it with a smile.

David Shelpman, 16, who shoveled 10 driveways, said that it was “just the right thing to do.” This wasn’t Shelpman’s first time shoveling as he had been doing it with his stepfather for their elderly neighbors since he was 8 or 9 years old.
