Nick Saban is a longshot contender for Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate.
According to BetOnline, an online sportsbook, Nick Saban, the 72-year-old retired college football coach, is among a long list of longshot contenders Harris could pick as her running mate, with 250-1 odds of receiving a nomination. Saban has the same odds as Oprah Winfrey.
Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney is another longshot contender with 100-1 odds, and former First Lady Michelle Obama achieving 28-1 odds.
BetOnline’s more likely options include Democratic Governors, like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who has 7-4 odds; Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who has 5-1 odds; and North Dakota Governor Roy Cooper, who has 3-1 odds.
Saban, who will join ESPN’s “College GameDay” as an analyst, retired in January 2023 from the Alabama Crimson Tide. He had an impressive career, winning seven national championships while he was head coach.
Democrats in Alabama attempted to recruit Saban, according to reports, as he had endorsed independent West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin in 2018 when Manchin was running for Senate as a Democrat. According to the reports, Alabama Democrats wanted Saban to serve as the party’s candidate for Senate against Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville (Alabama), but he never went through with a campaign. Furthermore, reports had surfaced that Saban never took the offer seriously and hadn’t considered running for Senate.
Conversations around who Harris, the presumptive Presidential nominee for Democrats, would pick as her running mate have heightened since she officially launched her campaign Monday.
Democrats have floated an all-female ticket with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. However, pundits warn that would not be a winning ticket.
