Justin Evans, Donald Trump’s special projects director, suggested Michelle Obama would be the Democratic candidate Republicans feared most.
According to the Daily Mail, Evans is confident Trump would defeat Vice President Kamala Harris, who moved to the top of the Democrat ticket after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.
Evans stated the GOP is “confident” they would “have beaten [former First Lady] Michelle [Obama] as well,” but noted “she would have been easily the most competitive.”
Evans described Harris as a weak candidate, too closely linked to the White House and her former running mate, Biden’s agenda, which would make her a far less formidable opponent than the former First Lady.
The veteran GOP strategist noted Harris’ extensive political career provided ample fodder for attacks, pointing to aspects of her career voters would consider failures, like her performance as border czar and how she managed concerns about the President’s cognitive health.
Evans also pointed out that Harris hadn’t won “a single delegate,” which would hinder her race as she didn’t have a gauge for the party’s temperature.
The GOP might also exploit another controversial aspect of Harris’ past: her reported affair with former California Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, who was 60, 31 years her senior at the time of the affair. Evans suggested the GOP might bring that up to undermine Harris’ credibility.
The GOP strategist also referenced a Truth Social post Trump made criticizing Harris’s “terrible pole numbers.” He explained the misspelling was intentional, reminding voters of Harris’s past relationships, including a fling with Montel Williams.
Although Evans acknowledged Harris would appeal to voters of color, he suggested her “past record on drugs and crime” could undermine her campaign with African American voters.
Evans also suggested Harris lacked political skills, claiming Trump should let her speak, which would be enough to expose her weaknesses.
