( – On Sunday, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) argued that the legal cases against former President Donald Trump showed a “fundamental lack of character.”

During an interview, CNN host Jake Tapper had asked Cheney about the legal woes that the former President has to deal with, including the most recent decision of a New York judge that Trump would be required to pay close to $355 million in fines in a New York civil fraud case. Last month, a New York jury had also ordered that Trump should pay $83.3 million for having defamed columnist E. Jean Carroll.

Cheney noted on CNN’s “State of the Union” that when looking at these cases, rulings, and judgments there is a common thread which was the former President’s unwillingness to follow the law, tell the truth, and his general “lack of character.” She continued by arguing that one of the most troubling things about the current political season is the extent to which there are people who used to be “honorable members of Congress” who had been abandoned in favor of people who are supporting Trump being elected.

Cheney slammed Trump for the recent ruling in Carroll’s defamation case, pointing out the “Access Hollywood” tape that had been released before the 2016 presidential race. Last year a jury had determined that Trump was liable for having sexually abused Carroll in the mid-1990s. This is an allegation that Trump has repeatedly denied.

The civil fraud case and the defamation case bring the total amount that Trump owes to $438.1 million.
