(FeaturedNews.com) – Five Democrats joined Republicans to pass a bill guaranteeing only U.S. citizens could vote in federal elections.
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives approved the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act after debating it on the House floor.
The bill passed with a final vote of 221-198.
Five Democrats joined the Republican counterparts to pass the bill; these include Democratic Reps. Jared Golden (Maine), Henry Cuellar (Texas), Vincente Gonzalez (Texas), Marie Gluesenkamp (Washington), and Don Davis (North Carolina).
The passage means the bill will head to the Senate, where it is unlikely to pass because of strong opposition from Democrats. However, should it pass, President Joe Biden has promised to veto the act.
GOP Rep. Chip Roy (Texas) introduced the bill in May, receiving support from former President Donald Trump, who pushed for the legislation during a high-profile press conference at Mar-a-Lago.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), who co-sponsored the bill, circulated a memo in the House Republican conference in the week leading up to the July Fourth week-long recess, advocating for the bill.
He continued arguing why the bill is necessary on X.
Johnson claimed the SAVE ACT would “safeguard” U.S. elections by guaranteeing only U.S. citizens voted in federal elections.
According to Johnson, the bill would mean state election officials must ask for U.S. citizenship proof before providing applicants with voter registration forms and require individuals to show proof of citizenship before registering to vote in a federal election.
The law would also give state officials access to federal databases to remove non-U.S. citizens from the voter roll and confirm citizenship for those lacking proof.
