McConnell Building Close Relationship With Top Democrat
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is trying to get on Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s (D-Ariz.) good side during a time when Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) the most prominent Democratic centrist has fallen from favor among Republicans.
In a recent event hosted at the McConnell Center at the University of Louisville, McConnel heavily praised Sinema. He also said that she would be one of the most effective bipartisan coalition builders on the Democratic side. This is something other GOP senators and aides have agreed with.
Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) said McConnell is thankful for Sinema’s help in defeating the Democrat’s attempts to weaken the filibuster.
Thune said that McConnell respected the fact that she stood in favor of the institution even if it went against her party.
Liberal democrats have been mad at both Sinema and Manchin for siding with Republicans and stopping the Democratic effort to stop the Senate’s filibuster rule. However, Republicans have said that a weakened filibuster would transform the Senate and would turn it into a Majority ruled body similar to the House.
Sinema also made a speech at the McConnel Center on Monday in favor of the filibuster. She said that it was important for them to focus on realistic solutions rather than radical policies.
