(FeaturedNews.com) – This past weekend NASCAR unveiled its electric race car prototype which is in alignment with the efforts of the company to bring down emissions, promote sustainability, and reach net-zero operating emissions within the next decade.

In its release, NASCAR noted that the “ABB NASCAR EV Prototype” had been created in partnership with ABB, Toyota, Ford, and Chevrolet. The $1.5 million prototype was unveiled on Saturday in downtown Chicago, only a day before the Chicago Street Rae.

In a statement, ABB executive vice president Ralph Donati stated that the collaboration between their company and NASCAR was aiming to push the boundaries of electrification technology.

NASCAR in its announcement noted that the company continues to be “committed” to the internal combustion engine’s legacy role in racing. It is also focusing on decarbonizing its operations and bringing the carbon footprint down to 0 before 2035.

NASCAR’s head of sustainability Riley Nelson told The Associated Press that the company wanted for electric vehicles to appear accessible and cool in racing.

The prototype was first driven by Semi-retired NASCAR driver David Ragan who told AP that the car did not smell or sound like any other car since he first started racing when he was 11 years old.

NASCAR has revealed that the electrified stock car is capable of producing 1,000 kilowatts at pear power and that it uses regenerative braking which makes it ideal for short oval tracks and road courses. If electric cars become the norm in NASCAR race tracks, then the events would become much quieter as the typical engine start sounds will not be present.
