Helmy Steps In Amid Menendez’s Departure
George Helmy has been sworn in to serve the remainder of Bob Menendez’s Senate term. The swearing-in occurred on Monday, following Menendez’s resignation in August after being convicted on charges of using his influence to interfere in state and federal criminal investigations and accepting bribes. Helmy, a Democrat, previously held the role of Chief of Staff to Governor Phil Murphy.
Helmy will serve until the November election, where Democratic Rep. Andy Kim and Republican hotelier Curtis Bashaw are competing for the seat. His experience as an aide to New Jersey U.S. Senators Cory Booker and the late Frank Lautenberg influenced his selection by Gov. Murphy, emphasizing his political acumen and leadership capabilities.

Legacy of Menendez
Bob Menendez resigned amid serious legal troubles. He was convicted of actions benefiting Egypt’s government in exchange for bribes, including providing sensitive information and ghostwriting a letter to lift a hold on military aid to Egypt. Menendez plans to appeal these convictions and denies the allegations, yet his resignation was inevitable. Helmy thus takes over in a significant moment of transition for the state. His tenure will last until the beginning of 2025.
“New Jersey deserves its full voice and representation in the whole of the United States Senate,” Helmy remarked during his sworn-in ceremony.
Helmy will also occupy Menendez’s former committee memberships, including Finance, Foreign Relations, and Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Sen. Ben Cardin has already taken over Menendez’s Foreign Relations gavel last year.

Helmy’s Background and Committee Roles
George Helmy is a Jersey City native with considerable political and professional experience. Besides serving as Murphy’s Chief of Staff, he has held executive roles at RWJBarnabas Health. Helmy, 44, the son of Egyptian immigrants, is the first member of the Coptic Orthodox Church to become a senator.
Helmy has stressed that he would focus on representing New Jersey effectively in the Senate without seeking elected office in the upcoming elections. This clarity at the outset of his tenure brings a certain stability and allows him to commit fully to policy continuity and addressing legislative priorities during his brief period in office.
