Starting in 2025, travelers will face a wave of new identification requirements both domestically and internationally, symbolizing a new era in global travel safety and security.

At a Glance

  • Real ID deadline set for May 7, 2025, impacting domestic flights.
  • Electronic Travel Authorization needed for U.S. travelers to the UK starting 2025.
  • ETIAS form becomes mandatory for U.S. travelers to Europe.
  • Travelers should prepare early to avoid disruptions.

Domestic Travel: Real ID Protocols

The Real ID deadline is scheduled for May 7, 2025, after numerous delays attributable to the coronavirus pandemic. This new requirement underscores the Real ID Act’s objective, passed in 2005 for enhancing identification security based on the 9/11 Commission Report.

Domestic flights will necessitate presentation of a Real ID or valid passport to proceed through security. Real IDs can be acquired at designated offices, requiring necessary documentation including proof of identity and state residency.

International Travel: New Requirements

United States citizens visiting the UK will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) starting January 8, 2025. This authorization will be valid for two years and permits multiple entries.

The European Union is initiating the ETIAS, making it compulsory for travelers from over 60 visa-exempt countries to secure authorization for entry into 30 European nations. Visitors are advised to complete this application process well in advance of their planned travel dates.

“The expansion of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) program will impact U.S. and European travelers headed to the United Kingdom.”

Preparing for the Future of Travel

Travelers are encouraged to update their documentation ahead of schedule to avoid being caught in the backlog of processing delays, as reported by Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

“We feel pressure. We are tremendously concerned about what happens next May, and that’s why we’re out there now a year ahead of time trying to convince people of the importance of getting this done before the last minute. Our facilities will swell up, and it will be a problem if people don’t get out and get their REAL ID’s.” – Alexi Giannoulias

The TSA has suggested that non-compliant individuals could face delays at checkpoints, prompting an effort to ease the transition into this new era of travel security.
