Surge in Illegal Crossings
U.S. Customs and Border Protection data shows a dramatic rise in illegal crossings at the northern border under the current administration. In the fiscal year 2023, nearly 190,000 crossings occurred, a sixfold increase from previous years. Primarily involving migrants from India, these crossings have exposed the inadequacies of existing border security measures. Many of these individuals aim to reach the U.S. for better economic opportunities, despite risks associated with harsh weather conditions and potential asylum denial.
An informal economy benefits from this surge, with Indian drivers charging between $150 and $300 per person to transport individuals from the border to major cities like New York. This points to a larger issue of economic migration patterns and the perceived opportunities in the U.S. versus Canada.
Policy and Legislative Responses
The lack of an updated Northern Border Threat Analysis since 2017 has prompted legislative action. Lawmakers, realizing the pressing nature of these security threats, have introduced the Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Act. The legislation mandates comprehensive annual threat analyses and strategical updates to address these growing challenges.
“Over the last four years, our nation has experienced an unprecedented surge in illegal crossings at the U.S.-Canada border,” said Senator Cramer. “Yet, the Northern Border Threat Analysis hasn’t been updated since 2017 and the strategy remains outdated. The escalating crisis at the northern border must be addressed.”
The Act’s provisions also call for DHS to report updates and analyses to Congress while justifying any lapse in security strategy enhancements. This accountability appears vital as more individuals on the Known or Suspected Terrorist list were apprehended at the northern border compared to the southern border recently.
Security Concerns and Administration Criticisms
Security concerns have fueled criticism of the Biden administration’s border policies, as the northern border has become increasingly porous. Critics argue that a lack of effective border management strategies has exacerbated these problems. The introduction of comprehensive border security strategies aims to tackle the demands arising from these surges in illegal crossings.
“President Biden has let our southern border completely crumble, and because of that, our northern border is now being targeted,” commented Congresswoman McClain.
These developments underscore the need for immediate attention and action to ensure national security remains uncompromised at the northern border. Failure to address these issues may result in ongoing vulnerabilities and continued rises in unauthorized entries into the U.S.
