Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., during an episode on the “Lever Time” podcast on Thursday, called for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached in connection to the recent report regarding the luxury gifts he received but never disclosed from a billionaire Republican donor.
During the podcast, Ocasio-Cortez, who had previously called for Thomas’ impeachment on Twitter, even said that she was willing to introduce the impeachment articles herself, claiming that his position as a Justice left the Supreme Court in an “emergency” and a “crisis.” She proceeded to state that she would be completely in favor of his removal.
In the podcast, she also spoke about how Congress is currently out of session, so if no one steps up for the impeachment article to be introduced she would do it, but currently, the Democrats do have the time to better strategize before potentially moving ahead with the impeachment. She added that if strategically they decide that impeachment is the way to go, she is okay not being the author or the one introducing the impeachment articles and she would still support impeachment regardless of who introduces it.
Following the revelation about Thomas receiving luxury gifts that he did not disclose, the Democrats have been outraged. The investigation on Thomas was first reported by a ProPublica investigation in which it was disclosed that Thomas and his wife had received luxury trips and vacations from real estate developer Harlan Crow, a major Republican donor, and billionaire. The undisclosed gifts include stays in his private resort, stays on his yacht, and usage of his private jet among other gifts.
