On Monday, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York) revealed she is firmly in support of Biden as he plans to remain the Democratic party’s presidential nominee.
Ocasio-Cortez, a member of “the Squad,” made the statements as a small number of House Democrats, including Rep. Adam Smith (Washington), called for Biden, 81, to step down from the race after his dismal debate performance on June 27.
Biden spent most of the debate against former President Donald Trump making incoherent statements, increasing concerns about his cognitive abilities, especially among Democrats and moderate and left-leaning media — Conservative media had been drawing attention to Biden’s lackluster cognitive ability for years.
However, even as some of her Democratic colleagues called for Biden to step down, Ocasio-Cortez remained silent until Monday.
Speaking to Ed O’Keefe, a senior White House correspondent for CBS News, Ocasio-Cortez explained she had “spoken to the President over the weekend” and “extensively,” during which Biden clarified he’d remain in the race.
The New York Democrat stated, “The matter is closed,” adding that Biden is the Democratic nominee and she “support[s] him.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s comments come after Biden sent a letter to congressional Democrats confirming that he wouldn’t be exiting the race.
In the letter, Biden writes that he is “firmly committed” to remaining in the Presidential race. He also called on Democrats to “end” the intraparty drama that has been at the center of many public and private complaints about his performance since the debate.
