Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is searching for a new campaign manager after her former campaign manager has been blamed for missing the payments related to her Met Gala appearance. It was that problem with the payments that resulted in the House ethics office determining the office had “substantial reason to believe” that Ocasio-Cortez had previously violated ethics laws by “accept[ing] impermissible gifts.”
Ocasio-Cortez attended the Met Gala in September 2021 where she wore a white dress with the statement “Tax the Rich” written across its back. It was that appearance that led the Office of Congressional Ethics to launch an official probe. During the probe, it was revealed that Ocasio-Cortez had failed to pay for several costs relating to her appearance, including her dress, and hair styling makeup. The investigation was launched around five months after the Gala.
Ocasio-Cortez has claimed that she intended to personally pay for all of these services and had even authorized her campaign manager to handle all of the payments. This has led to her questioning what happened that resulted in these services and goods not being paid.
The campaign manager, who by the time of her interview in May 2020 was still employed by Ocasio-Cortez, has provided a similar description of what occurred saying that she had not paid for the dress because she did not believe that the invoice had been final. She also said that she had not paid for the hairstylist until a complaint had been filed with New York City’s Office of Labor Policy and Standards for Workers because the invoice “fell off my radar.”
