Although former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) has described former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy who needs to be defeated in November, it appears she’s not convinced President Joe Biden is up for the job.
According to a Politico report published on Monday, Pelosi has become “convinced” that if Biden remains on the ticket, Democrats will lose the White House in November.
Politico reported the California Democrat “has been working the phones” since Biden’s dismal debate performance in the hopes of “finding a way to ease him off the ticket.”
The report suggests Pelosi has been doing this because she is “convinced Biden will lose.”
The report notes that one of Pelosi’s colleagues was shocked to see the former House Speaker “chatting, furtively but openly,” with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) in the corner of the House Democratic cloakroom in front of a dozen lawmakers.
Just how involved Pelosi is in the plot to get Biden to withdraw is unknown. However, insiders have revealed that the former Speaker “stage-managed phone calls to Jeffries” and has strategized with prominent figures in Democratic politics. She has also reportedly told one elected official that Biden’s legacy could not be “destroying” the Democratic Party.
However, all of Pelosi’s reported behind-the-scenes efforts took place before the assassination attempt on Trump. And how, if at all, the attempt on Trump’s life will change her stance on Biden remains unclear.
