Mac & Cheese Recall Details
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for several macaroni and cheese products due to temperature abuse from a malfunctioning refrigeration unit. Reser’s Fine Foods voluntarily initiated the recall.
The FDA has classified this as a Class II risk, which means, according to the agency:
“A situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
The recalled products include Reser’s American Classics Macaroni & Cheese White Cheddar and Reser’s American Classics Macaroni & Cheese, both in 12 oz packages. These items were distributed in California, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Other Affected Products and Precautions
In addition to the macaroni and cheese products, other items included in the Class II risk warning are Reser’s Essential Everyday Original Potato Salad and Reser’s American Classics Scalloped Potatoes. Consumers are strongly advised not to consume any of the recalled products. Those with allergies should take extra precautions.
“Product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to the Food and Drug Administration.
It’s important for consumers to check their pantries and refrigerators for these products and return them to the place of purchase or dispose of them properly.
Recent Food Safety Concerns
This recall is part of a series of recent food safety alerts. Bags of Brazil nuts have been recalled due to mold and yeast, while a kimchi product was pulled from shelves due to high levels of yeast growth. Both of these recalls were also classified as Class II risks.
More seriously, guacamole and salsa products were recalled due to listeria contamination, which the FDA classified as a Class I risk. Additionally, Boar’s Head meat products were recalled following a listeria outbreak that resulted in nine deaths and 57 hospitalizations across 18 states.

Broader Implications for Food Safety
These recalls underscore the importance of rigorous quality control measures in food production and distribution. They also highlight the need for consumers to stay informed about potential risks in the food supply chain.
While the current mac & cheese recall is not linked to severe health risks, it serves as a reminder of the potential dangers lurking in our food. Consumers should remain vigilant, regularly check for recall notices, and prioritize food safety in their homes.
As these incidents continue to occur, it’s crucial for regulatory bodies and food manufacturers to work together to ensure the highest standards of food safety for American consumers.
