Republican Party Fights To Protect Women
Republican senators have proposed an amendment to the Democrat’s version of the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This amendment would stop women from being included in the military draft.
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., along with Republican senators Mike Lee of Utah, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Ted Cruz of Texas, Marco Rubio of Florida, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Steve Daines of Montana, John Boozman of Arkansas, and James Lankford of Oklahoma were the ones to introduce the amendment.
This amendment strikes Section 521 of the NDAA draft for the fiscal year 2023 and if passed would change the word “person” to “male person”. If this amendment passes, then women would not be drafted into the military. This is why this proposition is known as the “Don’t Draft Our Daughters” amendment.
Regarding the original change proposed by the Democrats, they said that this decision to change the drafting to a more neutral term was because of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
House Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed, D-R.I., last year said that part of the reason for the military’s success and efficiency is because of women.
In the 2022 Draft of the NDAA Democrats were made to take out this more neutral language because of the efforts made by Missouri’s senator Hawley. Reed was also warned that Republicans would block any language propositions that would allow women to be drafted.
In an interview, Hawley told Fox News that while women who join the army should be celebrated, mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters should not be forced into going to war.
