Michael Steele, the former chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), has disclosed in a recent interview that there were certain members of the GOP who had been “privately wishing” that former President Donald Trump would be arrested before 2024 so that the party can move forward.

In recent weeks, Trump has faced a lot of backlash and criticisms from Republicans and even from some of his allies as many of his GOP-backed candidates failed to win in their competitive 2022 midterm elections this past November. Polls have also been showing a general trend of moving away from Trump and towards Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

According to recent polls, many Republican voters would prefer to see DeSantis as the frontrunner of the party in the 2024 election.

During an interview with Politico, Steele was asked what the effect of the RNC being shaped by Trump would be for the 2024 presidential primary.

Steele added that it would make a big difference. She added that she knew there were people who are hoping that Trump will be in jail by the time of the 2024 election. This means that there are those within the party who are worried about having Trump just freely roam and shape the political landscape for the next year and a half.
