(FeaturedNews.com) – Brazen thieves walked out of a building in Manhattan in broad daylight, loaded 400 bulletproof vests bound for Ukraine into three vans, and drove away. The thieves, wearing masks, appeared to know exactly what they were after.
The building, occupied by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, is a collection point for all sorts of donated goods headed for Ukraine. The items, police ballistic vests, were slated to go to the embattled country, most likely for use by civilian humanitarian workers and medics. Police didn’t say if anything else was missing.

The vests were reportedly sitting in full view of the public, which may have been why the thieves targeted them. These particular vests were donated by police departments, with no listed dollar value as of yet. The National Police Support Fund says ballistic vests can cost between $800 and $1,000 brand new.
Police are able to donate used vests after five years, as they’re considered out-of-date after that. The gear still works, but it may not be the current standard in use. Ballistic vest technology is a continuing science; as countermeasures to get around them, such as hollow-point bullets and high-velocity rounds, improve all the time. The New York Police Department is investigating the case.
