( – Cocoa, a two-toed sloth residing at Zoo Atlanta, received a heartwarming gift on Father’s Day when his second offspring was born on June 18. Zoo Atlanta recently announced that this is the first baby for Nutella, a six-year-old sloth, and the second for Cocoa, who is 30 years old. The zoo had anticipated the arrival of this offspring as both sloths were recommended for breeding.

Expressing her joy, Jennifer Mickelberg, the vice president of collections and conservation at the zoo, emphasized the uniqueness of sloths among mammals. She highlighted the importance of educating the public about their distinctive adaptations, as it fosters a deeper understanding of Earth’s biodiversity.

Excitingly, Cocoa might soon become a father for the third time. The Sloth Care Team and Veterinary Team at Zoo Atlanta have confirmed that Bonnie, another adult sloth residing at the zoo, is currently pregnant. In a previous press release, the zoo mentioned that Bonnie’s pregnancy had been verified through X-ray and ultrasound examinations during her physical check-up. This upcoming birth will mark Bonnie’s third child, with her previous two offspring, Willow and Raisin, not residing in other Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facilities.

Two-toed sloths are indigenous to Central and South America. Although they are not currently classified as endangered, their existence is threatened by human activities. Zoo Atlanta has shared that illegal logging has significantly depleted their natural habitat, and sloths often face electrocution when attempting to traverse forests by utilizing power lines.
