A sitting California mayor secretly promoted Chinese government propaganda on a U.S. website at the direction of People’s Republic of China officials, raising alarms about foreign influence infiltrating local American politics.[2]

Story Snapshot

  • Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang agreed to plead guilty to acting as an illegal agent of the People’s Republic of China, facing up to 10 years in prison.[2]
  • Wang worked with her former fiancé Yaoning “Mike” Sun from 2020 to 2022 to post pro-China content, including denials of Uyghur persecution, on the U.S. News Center website.[1][2]
  • Sun, Wang’s campaign staffer, serves a four-year prison sentence for similar activities as an unregistered foreign agent.[2]
  • Wang resigned as mayor hours after federal charges surfaced, with court ordering her to surrender passports and avoid Chinese government contacts.[1][2]

Federal Charges Against Wang

Eileen Wang, 58, of Arcadia, California, faces one felony count of acting in the United States as an illegal agent of a foreign government. The U.S. Department of Justice unsealed an information and plea agreement on May 11, 2026. Wang agreed to plead guilty, with a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment. She made her initial court appearance that day in U.S. District Court, Los Angeles.[2]

A federal magistrate set a $25,000 bond and required Wang to surrender all passports and travel documents. Prosecutors requested she refrain from communicating with Chinese government officials, including consular staff. Wang’s formal guilty plea is scheduled in coming weeks. Federal Bureau of Investigation officials described her actions as secretly serving Chinese interests.[1][2]

Propaganda Activities Detailed in Plea

From late 2020 through 2022, Wang and Yaoning “Mike” Sun operated U.S. News Center, a website targeting Chinese Americans. They followed directives from People’s Republic of China officials, posting pre-written articles via encrypted WeChat messages. Wang edited content per instructions, such as an August 2021 exchange where a Chinese official approved changes and she replied, “Thank you leader.”[2]

Wang communicated with John Chen, a convicted People’s Republic of China operative, in November 2021. She asked him to share a website article, stating, “This is what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to send.” She reported view counts back to handlers, like one post exceeding 15,000 views, without disclosing Chinese government direction on the site. Content included denying Uyghur persecution in Xinjiang.[1][2]

Wang never notified the U.S. Attorney General of her agency role while in the United States. Her plea admits these acts occurred domestically. Sun pleaded guilty in October 2025 to acting as an illegal foreign agent and received a four-year sentence in February 2026. Chen got 20 months in November 2024 for similar charges.[2]

Timeline and Resignation Impact

Wang won election to Arcadia City Council in November 2022, with the mayor role rotating among five members. She assumed mayor duties before resigning on May 11, 2026, hours after the plea unsealed. Her attorneys and city officials emphasized the conduct predated her election, tying it to personal media operations with Sun, her then-fiancé.[1][2]

No charges link Wang’s activities directly to post-election periods or Sun’s 2022-2024 conduct. Arcadia, in Los Angeles County’s San Gabriel Valley with a large Chinese American population, highlights vulnerabilities in local governance to foreign influence. This case echoes rising Federal Bureau of Investigation concerns over China targeting diaspora communities for operations.[2]
