Megachurch Founder ADMITS Horrifying Child Crimes

A Texas megachurch founder’s guilty plea to child sexual abuse charges exposes how broken church “restoration” processes allowed decades of ministry built on a foundation of lies and victim silencing.

Story Snapshot

  • Robert Morris pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl for four years in the 1980s
  • Gateway Church elders falsely claimed Morris underwent a “two-year restoration process” when it lasted only one month
  • Morris built America’s largest megachurch with 100,000 weekly attendees despite his criminal past
  • The convicted sex offender served on President Trump’s evangelical advisory board while concealing his crimes

Failed Church Accountability Enabled Decades of Deception

Robert Morris exploited his position as a traveling evangelist in the early 1980s to sexually abuse Cindy Clemishire, beginning on Christmas Day 1982 when she was just 12 years old. Morris warned his victim to “never tell anyone about this because it will ruin everything” while continuing the abuse for four years across Texas and Oklahoma. He manipulated his own wife by claiming he was merely “counseling” the child during the criminal acts.

Church Leaders Misrepresented Restoration Process

Gateway Church elders deliberately misled their congregation about Morris’s supposed accountability process. While church leadership claimed Morris underwent a rigorous “two-year restoration process” at Shady Grove Church, Morris admitted in his own 2011 book that he returned to ministry after just one month. This deception allowed Morris to minimize his crimes by framing them as a “moral failure” involving pride rather than acknowledging the sexual abuse of a child.

Criminal Justice Finally Served After Decades

Morris pleaded guilty in October 2025 to five counts of lewd and indecent acts with a child, receiving a 10-year suspended sentence with six months in Osage County Jail. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond emphasized that the case was “all the more despicable because the perpetrator was a pastor who exploited his position of trust and authority.” Morris must now register as a sex offender, pay restitution to his victim, and serve under supervision by Texas authorities.

Survivor Cindy Clemishire courageously came forward publicly at age 55, expressing hope that “many victims hear my story, and it can help lift their shame and allow them to speak up.” Her bravery has finally brought accountability to a predator who used religious authority to silence his victim and deceive thousands of faithful churchgoers who trusted his leadership for decades.
