(FeaturedNews.com) – On Monday, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), pushing against the deployment of barriers along the Rio Grande River which have been designed to stop migrants from attempting to cross into the U.S. illegally through the border.

Vanita Gupta, the Associate Attorney General, stated that they are alleging that Texas has violated federal laws with the installation of the barrier in the river without having received the proper federal authorization. She added that the floating barriers are also risking public safety and potentially threatening the navigation of the river. Finally, she pointed out that this decision could also cause harm to the country’s foreign policy as it could cause humanitarian concerns.

The barrier in question relates to the approximately 1,000 feet of buoys that have been deployed from Texas along the river. The state of Texas has also installed razor wire along the border in order to block migrants from attempting to enter the country illegally.

Abbott, who had originally received a letter from the Justice Department on Friday calling for the removal of the buoys, had been anticipating the legal action against him and had even urged them to bring it on and that he would be facing them in court.

According to the lawsuit, the barriers installed violate the Rivers and Harbors Act, which blocks the installation of any barriers in the U.S.’s navigable waters without the proper authorization. Abbott however, in his response letter on Monday, had claimed that his state was completely in the right when choosing to protect its border.
