Former Representative Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, posted a Donald Trump quote after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy managed to secure the speakership on Saturday. The start of the new Congress did not go as smoothly as the GOP majority in the House of Representatives might have hoped. On Tuesday, the House was meant to vote on the next Speaker, however, this proved to be a far longer battle than what might have originally been anticipated. In fact, 20 Republicans opposed McCarthy’s speakership bid, demanding to see many changes in the House rules package that would weaken McCarthy’s position as Speaker.

McCarthy failed to win the required 218-vote majority for 15 consecutive votes, only managing to win the position late on Friday night. His win was achieved only after former President Donald Trump, who continues to have a strong hold over the GOP, urged all detractors to support McCarthy.

Following his election as Speaker, McCarthy thanked the former President for his support and assistance. He also added that at this point it was clear that people should not doubt the influence that Trump still holds. As McCarthy added, Trump was instrumental in him receiving those final votes needed. He added that what Trump’s “really saying, really for the party and the country, we have to come together.”

Cheney, who has long been a critic of Donald Trump, was quick to point out that these remarks were unfounded. In fact, Cheney has pushed away from the rest of the Republican party due to her criticism and lack of acceptance of Trump’s claims that the 2020 election had been stolen due to widespread voter fraud. In response to McCarthy’s remarks, Cheney simply tweeted out one of Trump’s remarks to the Department of Justice regarding the 2020 presidential election.

Her tweet read,”‘Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen.’ Donald Trump to the Acting Attorney General and Acting Deputy AG. December 27, 2020.”
