( – Former Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol Raul Ortiz revealed on 60 Minutes that during his two years serving at the job during the Biden administration, he had never once spoken to President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. In May 2021, Biden had stated that Harris was the “border czar.”

Ortiz, who had served as the deputy chief under President Joe Biden, and the Chief during the Biden administration until his retirement in May 2023 claimed during an interview that was aired on Monday that both parties had used the border as media ops in a “two-mile stretch” but that they had neglected the rest of the open border.

He proceeded to say that he was frustrated with President Biden especially as during the two years of the Biden administration that he had served in his position he had never had any communication with Harris or Biden. He added that as the Border Patrol chief, he has 21,000 people under his command which is why it was a problem that he had never spoken to them.

He then pointed out that the United States needed to send a clear message to South and Central America that they would be sending back people who lacked a legitimate asylum claim. When asked whether or not the Biden administration had been sending mixed messages to migrants, Ortiz claimed that they had.

Ortiz was heading the Border Patrol during a few of the most high-profile incidents, including the case relating to the 15,000 Haitian migrants who had been under the Del Rio bridge. During his time he was also responsible for the expiry of Title 42, a record number of illegal crossings, and of his agents having been falsely accused of whipping.

In March 2023, he had testified under oath during a House field hearing in McAllen, Texas that the border was not secure. Two months after this testimony he had retired.
