(FeaturedNews.com) – Janie’s Life Changing Baked Goods, is a cozy bakery in East Harlem, New York, founded by Janie Deegan. While the bakery is known for its mouth-watering pie crust cookies, for Deegan it marks a change in her life trajectory.

As she has disclosed, she had once been homeless and recovering from an addiction. While she was getting sober she found that baking was a great meditative task that became an outlet for her. At the time she had been only 25 years old and she did not yet know what she wanted to do in her life, but baking helped her find connection.

When she first started out, baking was a hobby but soon enough her friends encouraged her and showed her how it could be more. As she notes, a friend of hers asked her to make the cake for one of the events she was having and she offered to pay Deegan for it. As Deegan notes looking back at the cake now it was far from professional, but still, it inspired her to start her career in baking. She first started selling her baked goods in 2015 and in time she opened her first bakery on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Her bakery has a clear open-door policy, which means that anyone able, willing, and enthusiastic about getting a job can work there despite their situation or any gaps in their resume. She added that when hiring they only look at the person in front of them. Across her two locations, Deegan has 15 employees.
