(FeaturedNews.com) – On Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that his government was preparing for the “uncertainty” of a prospective second Trump administration.
During the Montreal retreat, Trudeau’s Cabinet gathered to discuss the country’s strategy and prepare for a hypothetical second Trump administration, and the effects that could have on Canada and its alliance with its neighboring country. Trudeau has argued that former president Donald Trump represented “uncertainty” but that his government had been able to deal with Trump during his first time in office by exhibiting how a strong U.S.-Canada alliance could bring economic benefit to both countries.
Trudeau stated that they were uncertain about what actions Trump would take, but that they had handled the Trump administration before.
Kirsten Hillman, the Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. briefed the Canadian Cabinet during the retreat, along with a panel of experts.
During the first Trump administration, the relations between the two North American countries had worsened in large part because of the isolationist trade policies that Trump had followed, which included new tariffs on Canada’s imported aluminum and steel.
While Trudeau had not criticized Trump during his time in office, the former United States president had called the Canadian Prime Minister “dishonest” and “weak.” Trudeau has blasted Trump for his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, which he referred to as an “assault on democracy” that had been incited by the U.S. president.
A recent poll has found that two-thirds of Canadian respondents were concerned that the United State’s democracy would not be able to survive another Trump administration, while approximately 50 percent had agreed that the country was heading towards becoming an “authoritarian state.”
