(FeaturedNews.com) – In Texas, a new program has been launched that would give residents the option of trading in their firearms in exchange for grocery gift cards. The program is trying to remove firearms from circulating in many local committees.

The Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, which is a non-partisan organization focused on bringing down the levels of gun violence in Texas, is hosting the first gun buyback program on November 19. Texas has the 28th highest rate of gun violence in the country, and there are around 3,996 people who lose their lives to gun violence in the state annually. The program which is set to start ahead of the Thanksgiving celebration is attempting to give gun owners an option for safely getting rid of their unwanted weapons.

The gun owners who participate in the program will be given gift cards to H-E-B, a Texas grocery store chain. Those handing in nonfunction or at-home-manufactured guns will receive $50, while $150 will be given for shotguns and rifles. Those handing in handguns will receive $200 and semi-automatic rifles will be bought back for a $300 gift card.

The program also has the support of John Courage, District 9 Councilman who has been wanting to schedule such events since 2017 but had never before been able to gather the necessary funding. He noted that this gives people the option to hand in weapons they do not want or that they think of as dangerous to their household.
