He emphasizes the document’s highly confidential nature and even jokes that if Hillary Clinton had possessed it with her history of “private emails,” it would have been leaked constantly.
Smith’s indictment against Trump includes 37 charges related to Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and refers to this recording. While Trump may argue that the tape exonerates him, it actually demonstrates his awareness of the classification system and confirms that the documents in his possession were indeed classified. Trump even mentions how, during his time in office, he would have had the authority to declassify such documents, but acknowledges that this authority no longer exists for him.
